Introduction: Augustus was the son of Gaius Octavius and Grandnephew of
Julius Caesar. He was posthumously named Caesar’s heir and adopted son. Manipulating this connection, he rose to
political prominence after Caesar’s death in 44BC. He was a member of the 2nd Triumvirate for 10 years and restored order to the state. He later took absolute control of Rome and founded the Principate in 27BC.
